Users of SpaceClaim intuitive 3D modelling tools given access to latest electronic component technologies.
RS Components (RS) the world’s largest high service distributor of electronics and maintenance products and the trading brand of Electrocomponents plc (LSE:ECM), announces that its 3D CAD product models are now available in SpaceClaim format. SpaceClaim empowers engineers and industrial designers to be more creative and deliver products to market faster without the specialist training and complexity associated with traditional CAD tools.
As a matter of fact, RS has published its 30,000 3D CAD models of components to 14 syndicated online communities and web sites for mechanical and electronic design engineers. The move gives 4 million users instant access to the fast-growing library of electronic component CAD models from RS, reducing design time and effort.
Throughout the product development cycle, SpaceClaim’s direct modelling methodology, which has been described as being similar to clay modelling on a computer, makes it possible for engineers to easily explore their ideas and solve problems in 3D. They can re-use and quickly edit concept models from any CAD system, and simplify models for analysis in a fraction of the time it takes with traditional CAD based on complex parametric modelling. SpaceClaim’s simplicity means that non-CAD specialists can contribute at the early stages of product development, perhaps with input from sales, marketing and production departments. The addition of RS’ 3D model library will give SpaceClaim users access to the latest electronic component technologies in a familiar and fully verified format.
The models can be accessed in up to 30 different native file formats, making them suitable for most 3D CAD systems and eliminating the need for time-consuming model verification. The sites include the Autodesk Manufacturing Community, with 1.5 million users, TraceParts online with 870,000 users, SolidWorks‘ 3Dcontentcentral.com, a community of 612,000 users, and the Pro Engineer community, covering more than 370,000 users.
All the models have RS part numbers embedded within them so the parts become automatically included in the bill-of-materials (BOM) created by many CAD systems. According to research by TraceParts, when an engineer downloads a model there is an 80% chance of the part being designed into a product. This benefits RS’s suppliers for whom the distributor provides demand creation services and the agreement will introduce hundreds of thousands of new customers to RS.
Commenting for RS Components, Mark Cundle, technical marketing manager, said: “SpaceClaim is unique in its ability to involve many disciplines within a business in the product design process. By doing so early in the design cycle, it eliminates a lot of the time-consuming rework associated with traditional processes and enables organisations to tap into creative contributions from a variety of individuals from diverse disciplines. It’s an extension of the RS promise to make it very easy for all contributors to the design process to find, design-in and buy electronic components.”
He added: “3D software is an increasing proportion of all electronic design being undertaken today. For example, TraceParts estimates it accounts for 70% of all design in Europe, 45% in the US and 30% in Asia. Syndicating our 3D CAD models to these sites makes it even easier for engineers to streamline their find, design-in and buy process by using RS.”
